Timothy R. Lubenow, MD
He is an internationally recognized expert in complex pain disorders such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and is regarded as one of the nation’s foremost authorities on minimally invasive neuromodulation techniques, including spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation.
Dr. Lubenow trained and devoted his entire academic and clinical career at Rush University Medical Center, where he completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Following his fellowship, he joined the Department of Anesthesiology as faculty and went on to serve in multiple leadership roles over nearly four decades, including:

- Chair of the Section of Pain Medicine (1993–2025)
- Program Director of the Pain Medicine Fellowship (1987–2024)
- Medical Director of the Rush Pain Center (1993–2025)
- Director of Postoperative Analgesia Services (1986–2015)
During his tenure at Rush, Dr. Lubenow trained hundreds of anesthesiology residents, nurse anesthetists, and more than 180 pain fellows, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the field. His pioneering work in acute and chronic pain management has helped shape modern pain medicine practice, including the development of clinical guidelines and advanced neuromodulation training programs used across the country.
He has published extensively in top medical journals and contributed to over 50 book chapters, including in Wall & Melzack’s Textbook of Pain and Clinical Anesthesia. He also served on multiple national task forces and consensus panels, including the development of the Budapest Criteria for CRPS diagnosis and the Neuromodulation Appropriateness Consensus Committee (NACC) guidelines for spinal cord and DRG stimulation.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lubenow has received numerous honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Interventional Pain Medicine and Anesthesia from Rush University Medical Center (2025), Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (2023), and recognition as one of Chicago’s Top Doctors in Chicago Magazine and Castle Connolly Guide over multiple years.
After 38 years of academic service at Rush, Dr. Lubenow is excited to bring his expertise to Midwest Anesthesia & Pain Specialists (MAPS), where he continues his lifelong mission of advancing the field of pain medicine and improving the lives of patients living with chronic pain.
