What is Vein Disease?

Vein disease refers to a range of conditions that affect the veins, often leading to issues like varicose veins and spider veins. These occur when veins don’t function optimally, causing blood to pool rather than flow back to the heart. While spider and varicose veins may initially seem like cosmetic concerns, they can indicate deeper medical issues that should not be ignored.

Symptoms of Vein Disease

At MAPS, our Chicago vein care centers in Des Plaines and Midway locations treat a number of uncomfortable side effects of spider and varicose veins, such as:

  • Pain, throbbing, and swelling of the legs
  • Visible or protruding veins
  • Aching and soreness, particularly after activity
  • Restless legs that impact your sleep
  • Cramping, discomfort, or heaviness

MAPS is Chicagoland’s largest private pain specialist, and our holistic approach in treating the whole patient is always at the forefront of every interaction you’ll have.

What Causes Vein Disease?

Vein disease can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Genetics: Family history plays a significant role in the likelihood of developing vein disease.
  • Pregnancy: Increased blood volume and pressure during pregnancy can stress the veins, leading to varicose or spider veins.
  • Age: As we age, our veins naturally weaken, making us more prone to conditions like varicose and spider veins.

Over time, untreated vein disease can lead to complications such as pain, swelling, and further vein damage. If you’re experiencing symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice and consider treatment early to prevent worsening.

Vein Disease Conditions

There are several conditions that fall under the umbrella of vein disease:

  • Varicose Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins that are often visible beneath the skin. They can cause pain, swelling, and discomfort.
  • Spider Veins: Small, thin veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, typically in a cluster pattern.
  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency: A condition where the veins cannot efficiently re-turn blood to the heart, resulting in swelling, aching, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs.

At MAPS, our vein care centers in Chicago, including locations in Des Plaines and Midway, treat these conditions using minimally invasive procedures that are covered by most insurance plans.

At your initial consultation, you’ll meet with a physician who will determine if you suffer from vein disease. If you are a candidate you will then undergo a diagnostic ultrasound and your physician can recommend a treatment plan specifically catered to you. MAPS is dedicated to creating tailored treatment for each patient’s unique vein treatment needs.

All procedures are done outpatient, are minimally invasive, and performed in a comfortable, non-hospital setting.
